Born and raised in Havana, Jorge Luis Pacheco is a virtuoso pianist, composer, arranger, percussionist, and vocalist, trained at the Alejandro García Caturla music school and the Amadeo Roldán conservatory before going on to teach at the Guillermo Thomas conservatory himself.
His playing moves fluidly between Afro-Cuban jazz, traditional Cuban music, and classical repertoire — he's woven Chopin and Beethoven directly into his jazz compositions — with a measure of contemporary pop and soul running underneath it all. Monty Alexander put it simply: he "defies genre."
In solo performances, he often uses a loop station to build complex live accompaniments in real time, giving him the freedom to improvise around his own layered sound on stage.
